One hour: Basilica Church

The oldest church in Heliopolis, built in1907 to be the centre of the new city Heliopolis. It is linked to the Baron Palace by a tunnel and Baron Empain was buried inside it. It has a lovely ceiling with coloured glass and marble decorations.

Half a Day: Wadi Degla

Wadi Degla (Wadi is Arabic For Valley) is a 30km-long canyon that became a national park in 1999. It's a haven for wildlife - look out for the desert foxes and gazelles. People also visit Wadi Degla for hikes, bike rides and picnics.

Hanging Church

The church is built on top of the southern gate of the old Babylon fortress, hence the name. The nave is suspended above the passage ('Muallaqa' translates as 'suspended'). It is the most famous Coptic Christian church in the city and is in old Cairo, also known as the Coptic section.

Memphis and the Step Pyramid

Believed to have been created by one man, Imhotep. He has been called a doctor, sage, architect, astronomer and high priest. During an excavation in 1924-26, a pedestal of a statue of the pharaoh Djoser, believed to be from 2,500BC, was uncovered. This complex is thought to be the first known major work in stone.

Mohamed Ali Palace

This is the palace of Prince Mohamed Ali. The architecture is a blend of Fatimid and Mameluke styles, with some decorations and elements from the Ottoman period.

Mosque and Madrassa of Sultan Hassan

A masterpiece of Mamluke architecture, with inlaid bronze doors with gold and silver marble panelling. On special occasions the fountain used to run with sherbet.
