Aqaba's city centre is packed with sovinere shops, local restaurants and cafes that are worth a visit. 10 minutes walking distance.

Pharaoh Island

Tip: You need to book one day earlier for visa formalities. Visit Pharaoh Island in the Egyptian waters, one of the most picturesque spots in the Gulf. Take your snorkelling kit and explore the amazing coral landscape of the Red Sea.

Horse-and-carriage

Tip: Evenings are the best time to go. Take a horse-and-carriage ride along the corniche. Carriages are located near the hotel.

Walk along the Corniche

Tip: Wear a cap during the summer to protect your head from the sun. Take a walk along the corniche (King Hussein Street) until you reach the ruins of the early Islamic city of Ayla, otherwise known as Old Aqaba. Walk among the remains of the streets of this medieval city, abandoned since the Crusades.

Three Hours: Cruise on the Red Sea

Tip: Early booking required. Take a sunset cruise on the Red Sea and enjoy a glass of Jordanian wine as the sun sets behind the mountains.

Marine Park and Marine Science Station

Travel seven and a half kilometres south of the city to the Aqaba Marine Park and Marine Science Station. Here, you can have a quick introduction to the 1,200 beautiful and rare species of fish that inhabit local waters.

Aqaba Castle

Take a tour of Aqaba Castle, rebuilt in 1587 by one of the Mamluk Sultans. Nearby is the Aqaba Archaeological Museum, housed in the historic residence of Sharif Hussein Bin Ali, leader of the Great Arab Revolt of 1916.

Tip: Go early in the morning or after 3pm in the afternoon to avoid the crowds. Visit the ancient city of Petra, which is under two hours' drive away. This is Jordan's greatest attraction and is truly spectacular: a secret world of tombs carved into the rock.

Wadi Rum

Tip: The concierge can organise a day or overnight trip. Bring some sturdy walking shoes. Just 45 minutes north of Aqaba is Wadi Rum, which has some of the most spectacular desert landscapes in the world. With its steep cliffs and giant red sand dunes, it is a great place to go hiking, climbing, horse or camel riding. Alternatively, take a tour by 4x4 and camp overnight in a Bedouin tent.
