Tel Aviv, famously known as Israel’s ‘City That Never Sleeps’, is the place to go for anyone who wants to party until the Levant comes home. But for fans of architecture it’s also hard to beat, and with over 4,000 examples of the Bauhaus is a UNESCO listed site, and a city of pilgrimage for students of 20th century town planning.

But before anyone asks you why a paradigm of town planning should be the sort of place to attract the adventurous city breaker, take a tour and prepare to be amazed. For some of the houses and buildings are more than simply extraordinary, they’ll take your breath away.

In the 1930s, the city was considered to be a perfect site to experiment with new concepts in architecture and building, and this opportunity was enthusiastically seized by émigré German Jewish architects. They built houses and public buildings on a revolutionary master plan that merged the urban with the rural, blending their own ideas with local cultural traditions.

Of course you can have too much of a good (architectural) thing, so once you’ve had your fill of great buildings, head down to Rothschild Boulevard and the surrounding streets, where Tel Aviv bursts into life. Here, the bars and clubs never take a break, and cater to every taste under the hot Mediterranean sun. From chic wine bars and hip art gallery clubs to Berlin-style alternative hang-outs and beach side pubs, you’ll be spoilt for choice in this buzzing city of contrasts.
