Weekend break ideas
Atmosphere and Mystique in Paris

Paris weekend break

For many people, Paris is the epitome of everything that’s great about life. The fabulous food, the superb wines, the stylish people – it’s a place that wants to enjoy the good things. But strange as it might seem, some of the most popular haunts in the city are places that some say are haunted for real.

Passy, Montmartre and Montparnasse are all locations of some of the most atmospheric cemeteries you’ll ever visit, but none is more famous than Père Lachaise. Found in the east of the city, it’s a beautiful garden, an arboretum containing over 5,000 trees, a sculpture park, and a place of pilgrimage. First laid out on the orders of the Emperor Napoleon, it quickly became the place to be buried after Molière, France’s greatest playwright, was reinterred there. These days, it contains the remains of over one million people and is visited by over two million of the living every year.

Most seek out the graves of the famous, for here you can find the last resting places of Oscar Wilde, Chopin, Rossini, Maria Callas, Edith Piaf and, probably the most popular tomb of all, The Doors’ singer Jim Morrison.

For those who simply like to wander, you’ll have plenty of room to soak up the atmosphere. Some of Père Lachaise’s more secluded corners can be very atmospheric indeed, especially on a cold autumn day when the mist is rising and the leaves are drifting from the trees – sure to appeal to the mystery-lover, the artist or the old-fashioned romantic.
